Reason or faith? Ronald Numbers Reflects on Evolution. For creationists, history is based on the Bible and the belief that God created the world 6,000-10,000 ago. "We humans were perfect because we were created in the image of God. And then there was the fall. Death appears and the whole account [in the Bible] becomes one of deterioration and degeneration. So we then have Jesus in the New Testament, who promises redemption. Evolution completely flips that. With evolution, you don't start out with anything perfect, you start with primitive little wiggly things, which evolve into apes and, finally, humans. There's no perfect state from which to fall. This makes the whole plan of salvation silly because there never was a fall. What you have then is a theory of progress from single-celled animals to humans and a very, very different take on history, and not just human history. ... There's also this understandable, but hair-brained notion, that coverage should be balanced. Well, I guess that we should give the flat-earthers balanced treatment, too. Do we give holocaust deniers balanced treatment when it comes to talking about 20th century history? Do we give astrology or alchemy equal time? That's the defense many journalists seem to use. ... Creation VS Darwinism. "At present, science has no satisfactory answer to the question of the origin of life on the earth. Perhaps the appearance of life on the earth is a miracle. Scientists are reluctant to accept that view, but their choices are limited: either life was created on the earth by the will of a being outside the grasp of scientific understanding, or it evolved on our planet spontaneously, through chemical reactions occurring in nonliving matter lying on the surface of the planet. The first theory places the question of the origin of life beyond the reach of scientific inquiry. It is a statement of faith in the power of a Supreme Being not subject to the laws of science. The second theory is also an act of faith. The act of faith consists in assuming that the scientific view of the origin of life is correct, without having concrete evidence to support that belief." (Robert Jastrow, Ph.D Theoretical Physics, "Until the Sun Dies," pp. 62-63, 1977) Truth, as recorded over and over by history shows that the seed of wheat has never brought forth anything but wheat. We all know this is true; it is common knowledge. Never once in our long history has the seed of wheat brought forth tomatoes, or something never before seen. Yet these miraculous events ought to have happened at least once if evolution is true. "More disquieting still is Professor D.M.S. Watson's defense. "Evolution itself," he wrote, "is accepted by zoologists not because it has been observed to occur or...can be proved by logically coherent evidence to be true, but because the only alternative, special creation, is clearly incredible." Has it come to that? Does the whole vast structure of modern naturalism depend not on positive evidence but simply on an a priori metaphysical prejudice. Was it devised not to get in facts but to keep out God?" (CS Lewis, The Oxford Socratic Club, 1944) ... Read More:  http://www.alainsnewsletter.com/read.php?sid=174

Darwin-loving museum shooter hates Bible, Christians. James von Brunn, the man who allegedly shot and killed a guard at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., was a Darwin-lover who hated the Bible and Christians, and defies media efforts to classify him as a stereotypical "right-winger," according to reports. The Moonbattery blog revealed von Brunn advocated the socialist policies espoused by Adolf Hitler and used Darwinian theory to support his anti-Semitism. And in statements that later were stripped from an anti-religion website, he wrote, "The Big Lie technique, employed by Paul to create the CHRISTIAN RELIGION, also was used to create the HOLOCAUST RELIGION--CHRISTIANITY AND THE HOLOCAUST are HOAXES." The blog had an answer to how to classify von Brunn, who remains hospitalized after being shot while attacking and shooting a guard at the museum: "If it barks like a moonbat, it's a moonbat." "That this shooting occurred shortly after President Obama's former mentor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, blamed 'the Jews' for his lack of access to his former parishioner is a troubling confluence of events as well," she wrote. ... Where are the human fossils? What happened to all the people who were not on board Noah's Ark? If there were many millions of people populating the earth at the time of the Flood as creationists have suggested, wouldn't many of those people have been buried in Flood sediments? So why do we not find hundreds or even thousands of human fossils in the rock layers regarded as Flood sediments, with perhaps even some human fossils alongside, say, dinosaur fossils? These are, of course, fair questions that are commonly asked. Because of our understanding of the Flood from the Scriptures, we might expect to find human fossils in Flood strata, so it is rather surprising, at first glance, that we don't find any. However, Scripture (backed up by so much other evidence) is very clear that there was a global Flood and the pre-Flood people were destroyed, so there must obviously be an explanation for this lack of human fossils. Consequently, we are going to attempt an explanation by exploring possible processes during the Flood and logical deductions from present observations that could help us understand why there are no undisputed human fossils found in Flood strata. ... The Vatican and evolution: Creationist responds. Mortenson: Well, I would say that first of all the Book of Genesis is foundational to the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that the world was created in perfect condition; there was no sin, no death. Genesis 3 tells us why death came into the world and gives us the very first promise of the Messiah in Genesis 3:15; and in 1 Corinthians 15, Paul talks about the fact that Jesus Christ is the last Adam, and Adam is the first Adam, and he says for as in Adam all die even so in Christ shall all be made alive. So Paul connects the work of Christ to what happened in the Garden of Eden. And he builds his doctrine of marriage on the fact that God created Adam and Eve. So the gospel message is built on the foundational truths of Genesis. We also have the statements of Jesus himself when he was asked about divorce in Mark 10; he took the Pharisees back to Genesis. And when he was talking to the Pharisees on another occasion in John 5, if you believe Moses you would believe my words for he spoke of me. So Jesus and the apostles clearly tie the ministry and the gospel of Jesus Christ to Genesis -- and it is foundational to the gospel. ... The Mystery of the Pseudogenes. Who would have predicted this? - - besides creationists and intelligent design theorists that is?  Creationists and intelligent design theorists have been claiming for many years that the concept of "Junk DNA" (as well as vestigial structures) was not entirely correct. I myself have been promoting this idea for over 11 years (as of June, 2008).  Yet, only now are mainstream scientists finally starting to realize the significant errors in their long-cherished beliefs when it comes to the ill-conceived notion of junk DNA - an idea which was based on ardently held evolutionary presuppositions that blinded mainstream science and prevented them from searching out the hidden treasures of so-called "junk DNA" for a fairly long time. When are scientists going to start realizing that the creationist paradigm does indeed have very good predictive scientific value when it comes to accurately understanding and investigating the physical world and universe? It is becoming more and more clear that the key functional differences between living things, like humans and apes, are not so much found in protein-coding genes, but in the non-coding regions of DNA once thought to be functionless "junk-DNA" - evolutionary remnants of past mistakes that are shared between various creatures.  ... True Science or Dogma? Evolutionary ideas are generally thought to refer to the origin of living things. However, such ideas have seeped into many aspects of science to include sciences dealing with both living and nonliving things. See Related Story. For example, the study of the formation of the stars, galaxies, and the universe itself employs evolutionary ideas in the sense that many believe that natural, nondeliberate, nondirected changes acting over time can produce all of the features of our universe. Likewise, Darwin famously proposed that the variety of life itself is entirely the result of similar nondeliberate natural processes acting over time. Darwin published his seminal book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life, in 1859. Until Darwin, evolutionary ideas, though prevalent in the scientific community, had not really taken hold. Most scientists still believed that an intelligent or even a divine force was at work in nature and that this was responsible for certain aspects of living things and of the universe itself. ... 150 Years After Darwin. Intelligent Design Advocates: What's Their Message? Living cells are unbelievably complex. Every cell possesses thousands of microscopic biochemical machines, each doing its specific chemical task. Advocates of intelligent design (ID) maintain that these structures and biochemical processes are too complex to result from evolution, from chance mutations and natural selection. ID advocates study molecular features, such as the blood coagulation system, that require several or many parts to be present all at once before the system can function at all. An analogy sometimes used to illustrate this argument is the common mousetrap. The mousetrap requires several parts, all properly assembled, before it will catch mice. If one part is missing, it won't work. So how could it have "evolved" one part at a time when it's worthless until all the parts are put together? The mousetrap is an example of what's known as irreducible complexity. It can't function without all of its parts (its complexity) present at once.  Even if one complex part happened to appear, it would be useless by itself. ... Three Questions to Ask Your Biology Teacher about Evolution. In the Cambrian Explosion (which is dated by scientists to 530 million years ago), all the major body plans for animals show up in a geological instant without any trace of less complex ancestors. Rather than emerging in a step-by-step fashion, as predicted by evolutionary theory, the most complex animals show up virtually overnight (which is why the Cambrian Explosion is also called "The Biological Big Bang." The Cambrian explosion occurred within an exceedingly narrow window of geologic time, lasting no more than 5 million years. Compared with the 3-plus-billion-year history of life on earth, the period of the explosion is less than one minute in a 24-hour-day. In comparison, this is less than one stride across an entire football field. Rather than life evolving over a long period of life on earth as Darwin surmised, it actually appeared in a very short time span. Darwins' tree of life is a myth. ... EXPELLED: No Intelligence Allowed. Ben Stein, the highly recognizable television personality, actor and former White House presidential speech writer, is on a journey to answer one of the biggest questions ever asked: "Were we created, or are we the result of random chance - a mud puddle struck by lightning?" Stein, who is also a lawyer, an economist, an author and social commentator, is stunned by what he finds on his journey. He discovers an elitist scientific establishment that has traded in its skepticism for dogma. But even worse, Stein uncovers a long line of biologists, astronomers, chemists and philosophers who have had their reputations destroyed and their careers ruined by a scientific establishment that allows absolutely no dissent from Charles Darwin's theory of random mutation and natural selection. ...  Are the Genesis Creation Days Literal or symbolic? I received the material posted below from Dr. Sean Pitman, a talented young physician whose hobby is religion. He was contacted by Zach Armstrong, who believes that the story of creation, as recorded in Genesis, should be interpreted in a symbolic manner. He argued his case using certain biblical texts allegedly suggesting that each day of creation might have been long seasons instead of literal 24 hours as interpreted by young creationists. Dr. Pitman answers each argument with reasons why he rejects this manner of reading the story of origins. This exchange is followed by Pitman's response to Desmond Ford interpretation of the Genesis record of Creation. ... Read more? Click Here!

The difference "Expelled" will make. Ben Stein's new movie Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed opened April 18 in theaters. It explores the widespread persecution " destruction of livelihoods, careers and reputations" of scientists who doubt Darwin's theory of evolution and think intelligence is needed to explain life's origin and development. Controversy surrounds this film. Reviews tend to be extremely positive or extremely negative. ... Expelled, by contrast, points up the unhealthy state of contemporary science regarding biological origins. Our intellectual elite have insulated Darwinian evolution from scientific scrutiny. Moreover, they have institutionalized intolerance to any criticism of it. Expelled documents this institutionalized intolerance and thereby unmasks the hypocrisy of an intellectual class that pretends to value freedom of thought and expression, but undercuts it whenever it conflicts with their deeply held secular ideals. ... Can Computers Mimic Evolution? Darwinism holds that new genes can evolve blindly out of old genes by gene duplication, mutation and recombination under the pressure of natural selection. The strong version of panspermia holds that they cannot arise this way or any other way in a closed system. If a computer model could mimic the creation of new genes by the Darwinian method, it would establish that the process works in principle and strengthen the case for Darwinism in biology. Here we briefly discuss some evidence and arguments for the Darwinian mechanism and some for panspermia. Then we consider three well-known computer programs that undergo evolution, and one other proposal. None of them appears to create new genes. The question remains unanswered. ... Anthony Flew - The Honest Ex-Atheist. Anthony Flew, a renowned British defender of atheism, decided that the undeniable evidence for the complexity of life, its mysterious origin, and the fine tuning of the universe, was too much for him to hold to his atheistic philosophy, and prompted him to accept the notion the there must have been an Intelligent Designer who is responsible for both life and the universe that makes this possible. No Intelligence Allowed Reviewed. Stein interviews several scientists who have lost their jobs and been "black balled" from mainstream science because of minor admissions of the plausibility of design. Richard von Sternberg, former editor of The Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington, was fired by the Smithsonian Institute after he authorized the inclusion of a paper by Stephen Meyer that was supportive of intelligent design. Stein interviews two professors who each lost their jobs (from separate universities) after supposedly sympathizing with intelligent design. In addition, several more scientists are interviewed but their appearance is distorted because they fear repercussions from the scientific community. Overall, the conclusion appears clear that if you are a scientist you best never (publicly) discuss intelligent design. ... Can You be an Adventist and an Evolutionist? So, my dear friend, Ervin, please put aside all the talk about "the great variability in how Christian theologians over the last 2 millennia have attempted to comprehend these complex topics" and so forth, and answer one simple question, nothing else; How does one explain the cross, which is to eliminate death, with the evolutionary schema, in which death, and lots of it, was needed in order to create us? ... In any evolutionary schema, death is the means to create life. So God still used death in order to finally create the first moral beings, who, then "because of sin" had to die, had to face the very horrible thing that God, in His love and wisdom, used to first create them? Doesn't seem logical. ... Read more: http://www.atoday.com/magazine/2008/01/debate-can-you-be-adventist-and-evolutionist

Fossil hunter digs up climate clues. Johnson grew up in Washington state, in an observant Seventh Day Adventist household. The religion, probably more than any other Christian sect, latched itself onto paleontology, with the aim of discrediting a host of emerging scientific fields offering theories about an Earth that was much older than the roughly 6,000 years Seventh Day Adventist teachings believed. ... By the time he was a teenager, he had started questioning discrepancies between his religion and everything he was learning about fossils and geology. One day, around age 17, he stood in a fossil lake bed in British Columbia and calculated about 30,000 layers. If each layer took even just a year to form, it would make the lake bed 30,000 years old. That day, he says, he realized that his religion's fixation upon a 6,800-year-old world conflicted with what he now believed. Eventually, he unhinged himself from his faith. ... Dinosaur graveyard may unearth new reasons for their extinction. Spanish scientists have unearthed what could be Europe’s largest dinosaur boneyard, finding the remains of 65ft plant-eaters never before discovered on the continent. The palaeontologists believe they have found eight different species amid the 8,000 fossils discovered so far. The range of species they are finding at the 80 million-year-old site and their state of conservation is virtually unparalleled in Europe and challenges long-held beliefs about the way in which dinosaurs became extinct. ... "Noah's Flood" May Have Triggered European Farming. New research suggests the biblical story of Noah's flood may have been inspired by a catastrophic flood more than 8,000 years ago. Around this time the North American ice sheet melted, raising sea levels and flooding the Black Sea. ... The geologists based their controversial claim on sonar maps, which showed old shorelines buried beneath the mud, 295 to 328 feet (90 to 100 meters) below the surface of today's Black Sea. They also found perfectly preserved dunes, suggesting that submergence had been quick, as well as freshwater and marine shells in mud cores. ... Biologist fired for beliefs, suit says. The battle between science and creationism has reached the prestigious Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where a former researcher is claiming he was fired because he doesn't believe in evolution. Nathaniel Abraham filed a lawsuit earlier this week in US District Court in Boston saying that the Cape Cod research center dismissed him in 2004 because of his Christian belief that the Bible presents a true account of human creation. Abraham, who is seeking $500,000 in compensation for a violation of his civil rights, says in the suit that he lost his job as a postdoctoral researcher in a biology lab shortly after he told his superior that he did not accept evolution as scientific fact. Why Evolution is Impossible. Complex organisms arose spontaneously from a primordial soup of chemicals that randomly came together in the beginning of what we now define as “life.” No one saw these processes take place, and no scientist or group of scientists has ever replicated the primordial beginning of life from pure chemistry to biology. There is no way to get life from non-life. Something from nothing is mathematically, scientifically, and logically impossible. The impossibility of spontaneous generation is one of the first fundamental tenets of science that a child learns, and yet it is a basic tenet of the evolutionary scientist whether he cares to admit it or not. ... A Multiverse Scientific Fiction? Science clings as dogmatically to its metaphysical materialism as Orthodox Jews do their prayer shawls and yarmulkes. According to the scientific mind-set, the universe and all it contains must be sufficiently self-explanatory. To look outside it, to speculate that something could exist outside it, is superstition or, even worse, religion—the unpardonable thought crime. Of course, with everyday research science should deal only with the immediate material evidence (reverting to the god-of-the-gaps phenomenon wouldn't be wise here). "Feathered" Dinosaur Was Bald, Not Bird Ancestor. A shadow of doubt has been thrown over the widely held theory that dinosaurs had feathers and that they gave rise to modern birds. How to Interpret the Fossil Record. The standard approach to looking at fossils in the geological column is to assume that lower is older. Since the geologic column represents millions of years of Earth's history, then obviously the fossils in each of the layers must be the same age as the layer that they are found in. What is especially interesting is that the fossils do appear to show a progression from the most "simple" of organisms, such as single celled creatures like bacteria, to the most "complex" organisms, such as vertebrates, mammals, and of course humans. ... Seeing remarkable changes in a short time, he extrapolated backward to infer that change at that constant rate must have produced new species over vast eons. Darwin's pigeon-breeding produced only pigeons, however. New birds -- or entirely different animals -- never resulted. Likewise, thousands of years of selective breeding of wolves produced many varieties of dogs, but nothing else. ... Read more ==>

FossilsAncient Fossils with Preserved Soft Tissues and DNA. Scientists are asking, "How can this protein be so fresh when it is contained in such old bones?" We should consider the possibility that they will never find the answer because they might be asking the wrong question. Maybe they should ask, "How can these bones be so old when they contain such fresh protein?" That throws a whole new light on the subject. They will not ever figure out how protein and DNA can last for tens of millions of years without breaking down if protein and DNA cannot really last for tens of millions of years. They might just as well be wasting their time ... Read more ==>

Interpreting the Geologic column.  If the current features of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado Plateau, Kaibab Plateau, and sedimentary layers are inconsistent with ancient formation and tens of millions of years of erosive pressures, what other explanation might there be? Well, it seems to me that sedimentary layers and topographical features of this entire region were formed very rapidly. The majority of the sedimentary layers were laid down in rapid succession, while the underlying layers where still relatively soft and non-lithified (not turned to hard stone yet) by a serious of massive closely-spaced catastrophic depositional events (see section on Clastic Dikes below). ...Full story: http://www.detectingdesign.com/geologiccolumn.html

Let the Ideas Compete. For at least four years now a heated debate has been raging in certain regions of the United States. Should creationism be taught alongside evolution in the science classroom of public schools? The controversy has divided school boards, parents, and whole communities--in Wisconsin, South Carolina, Kansas, Montana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Georgia, and elsewhere. Not having followed the issues closely, and feeling somewhat removed from the situation, I've refrained from commenting thus far. But a recent editorial in the Washington Post stirred me up a bit.1 ... Full story: http://www.adventistreview.org/2005-1512/story4.html

In Defense of charles Darwin. The publication of this article in this forum should not be interpreted as an endorsement of Darwin's theory of evolution. Personally, I do not see any convincing arguments presented here in support of the common descent of man. Nevertheless, in fairness to Charles Darwin, I have to admit that he might have been more advanced in his views about the abolition of slavery than the Seventh-day Adventist pioneers. Read what follows and make up your own judgment . ... Read more ==>

Triumph of Design & the Demise of Darwin DVD. "The Triumph of Design and the Demise of Darwin" clearly and dramatically shows the gaping holes in Darwinian theory and the mounting evidence for the intelligent design of the universe. The video features Phillip Johnson, the distinguished law professor from the University of California, Berkeley, whose best-selling book, "Darwin On Trial," reignited the evolution controversy in the early 1990s ... Hawking: I Was Wrong About Black Holes. Astrophysics Stephen Hawking, the author of the “Brief History of Time,” now says that he was wrong about black holes. For thirty years he has maintained that black holes swallow everything that comes near them, including light rays; but now he is saying that galactic traps may in fact allow information to escape. For more than two decades, I have been affirming that black holes are based on fiction, but nobody would listen to me. ... Full story: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,125900,00.html

Creationism Trumps Evolution! After almost a century of indoctrination in our public school in the theory of evolution, the majority of Americans still believe that humans were created by God in their present form. And the majority of those who grant that humans evolved from lower forms of life think that it was God who guided such evolution. How do you explain this failure of Darwin's theory of origins to convince the general public of the correctness of its assumptions? It means, at least, that the church has not lost all its power to influence the thinking of the general population. Actually, the idea that chance coupled with natural selection can produce such a fined tuned universe is hard to sell! If life can spontaneously spring from non-living matter, then scientists should have been able to replicate this in the laboratory by now a million times! ...
